The fundamentals of painting exhibition: handling, hanging
Collection on Display and the Fundamentals of Painting Exhibitions
General Questions
Unit Summary
Painting has falsely appeared as one of the simplest mediums to exhibit in a museum permanent space or temporary exhibition. Experience shows how challenging the experience can be and how the curator in charge of the installation can make multiple choices to enhance the quality of the presentation and the experience of the visitor. Based mainly on first hand experience in French Museums as Assistant exhibition curator and then as curator of several exhibitions (Giotto e compagni in the Louvre, Italian paintings in musée de Tessé, Velazquez in Orléans Fine Arts Museum, ...), this seminar aims at engaging together with specific examples and to question how to manage a presentation of paintings to serve aesthetics but also the multiple subjects a painting show can address.
