Annabelle Ténèze


A former student at the École Nationale des Chartes and the Institut National du Patrimoine, Annabelle Ténèze began her career in 2006 as heritage curator in charge of prints and drawings at the Musée National Picasso-Paris. In 2012, she was appointed director of the Musée d’Art Contemporain de la Haute-Vienne - Château de Rochechouart. In 2017, she became director general of Les Abattoirs, an institution that combines the Musée d’art Moderne et Contemporain de la Ville de Toulouse and the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain Occitanie Toulouse. At Les Abattoirs, Annabelle Ténèze curated numerous thematic exibitions, including Medellin. Une histoire colombienne (with the Museo de Antioquia, Medellin, 2018), Picasso et l’exil. Une histoire de l’art espagnol en résistance (with the support of the Musée National Picasso, 2019), Revue noire. Une histoire d’art contemporains africains (2020), La Dame à la Licorne. Médiévale et si contemporaine (in partnership with the Musée de Cluny - Musée National du Moyen Age; 2020–21), as well as numerous monographs, devoted in particular to women artists, including the recent Niki de Saint Phalle. Les années 1980–1990, l’art en liberté (2023). In addition, she instigated several traveling artistic programmes in the Occitanie region, including Horizons d’eaux, a contemporary and living art programme on the Canal du Midi, which was transformed in response to a project in 2020 in support of artists during the COVID-19 crisis, Je suis né étranger in 2019, and Des montagnes et des artistes, a contemporary art trail along the GR10 footpath, in 2023. A teacher at the École du Louvre, she is also a member of several committees, including the scientific committee of the INHA, the board of MUCEM and the Artistic Committee of the Grand Paris. Annabelle Ténèze succeeded Marie Lavandier, director of the Louvre-Lens from September 2016 to May 2023. She took up her post in autumn 2023.
